Hotel prices in Cuba do not jump about from hour to hour the way they can on large booking sites. The hotels we sell there are priced by season, and a season’s price holds, which is mostly good news: the price you see for November is set by the calendar, not by how many people looked at the page today.
What moves it is four things, and you can answer all four before you search.
When you are going
The season is the largest single factor. Christmas, New Year, the dry winter months and the weeks around Easter are the expensive ones across the island, and the difference between those weeks and the quieter months is not small. If your dates are flexible by a week or two, moving them is worth more than any amount of comparison.
The other side of it is weather and crowds. The cheaper months are cheaper for a reason, and on the north coast that reason is usually rain. Late April, May and early December tend to sit in the middle on price and near the top on conditions.
How many of you are in the room
Cuban hotels price per person per night rather than per room. That one difference explains most of the confusion when two people compare prices for the same hotel.
A room for one costs more per person than a shared double, because the room is sold once instead of twice. A third adult sharing usually pays less than the first two, and children are often priced lower still, depending on their age and the hotel. So a nightly figure means little until you have said who is travelling, which is why our hotel search asks for your party before it shows a price.
What is included with the room
Room only, breakfast, half board and all inclusive are different prices for the same bed. On the beach at Varadero and the cayos, all inclusive is the normal way a hotel is sold and the alternative is rarely much cheaper. In Havana, Cienfuegos and the other cities it is the opposite: breakfast is the sensible plan, and you will eat better outside the hotel anyway.
Where a hotel offers an upgrade to half or full board, it is a set supplement per person per night, so it is worth deciding early but not worth agonising over.
How far ahead to book
Late availability in Cuba is real but thin, and it is the best rooms in the most popular hotels that go first, particularly over the holidays. If your dates are fixed, booking early is worth more than waiting for something to appear. If they are not, search a few different weeks: the difference can be larger than you expect.
