Practical thinking for a better-paced first plan.
Colombia is large and mountainous. Pair Cartagena with Santa Marta and Tayrona on the coast, Medellín with the coffee region in the Andes, and treat Bogotá and Villa de Leyva as a third chapter.
Road journeys between regions are long and winding, so domestic flights between Bogotá, Medellín and Cartagena save days. Keep overland travel for shorter hops such as Bogotá to Villa de Leyva.
Bogotá sits at about 2,640 metres, so take the first day gently and bring layers. Medellín is mild year-round, while Cartagena is hot and humid, with its drier months from about January to April.
Entry rules depend on your passport and can change, so check them before booking. Tayrona and other national parks can close for set periods during the year, so confirm opening dates before fixing your plans.
