Chile stretches more than 4,000 km from north to south. Treat Atacama, Santiago and the coast, and Patagonia as separate chapters joined by domestic flights, and add Easter Island or the lakes deliberately.
The main trekking season runs roughly September to April, with the strongest winds from November to January. Puerto Natales is the gateway, about 112 km south of the park, so book refuges and campsites early.
San Pedro de Atacama is about 100 km from the Calama airport and sits at roughly 2,400 metres; excursions such as El Tatio go much higher, so allow a gentle first day.
Easter Island is reached by a flight of around five hours from Santiago, so plan several nights. Entry rules depend on your passport and can change, so check them before booking.
